Sarawak Committed To Ensuring Economic Development Without Compromising Environmental Sustainability
KUCHING: The Sarawak Government remains committed to ensuring that economic development is carried out in a balanced manner without compromising environmental sustainability, in line with the state’s green development agenda and low-carbon economy.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg said that several key approaches have been implemented, including strengthening enforcement through Operasi Bersepadu Khazanah (OBK), enhancing community participation through the appointment of Community Rangers, and increasing public awareness via the “1000 Site Visit to Save Wildlife” programme.
In addition, efforts also involve strengthening the management of protected areas such as national parks and wildlife centres, implementing species rehabilitation programmes, as well as adopting technology and innovative approaches in biodiversity monitoring.
“These initiatives demonstrate our commitment to combating illegal hunting activities, protecting endangered species, and ensuring that Sarawak’s natural heritage continues to be preserved,” he said.
He said this in a speech text delivered on his behalf by Sarawak Deputy Minister for Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment, Datuk Len Talif Salleh, during the Presentation of Appointment Letters to Community Rangers, the flag-off of Operasi Bersepadu Khazanah (OBK), and the launch of the “1000 Site Visit to Save Wildlife” programme at the Sarawak state level, held at Dewan Semeba on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the Sarawak Premier also expressed his appreciation to the Federal Government through the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) for its support and close cooperation in advancing the national natural heritage conservation agenda.
He added that the strategic collaboration between the State and Federal Governments reflects a unified effort in protecting biodiversity in a comprehensive and sustainable manner.
“Sarawak is indeed fortunate to be endowed with extraordinary biodiversity.
“Our tropical rainforests are not only home to a wide range of flora and fauna species but also represent a natural heritage that must be safeguarded for future generations,” he said.
