UPM Sarawak Makes History With First Cohort Of Master Of Renewable Energy Students
BINTULU: The Faculty of Humanities, Management and Science (FKPS), Universiti Putra Malaysia Sarawak (UPMS) has marked a significant milestone with the enrolment of its first cohort for the Master of Renewable Energy programme.
The pioneering group commenced their studies in Semester 2 of the 2025/2026 academic session, positioning UPMS among leading institutions in Borneo in producing experts for the green energy sector and becoming the first such programme in Borneo.
“The introduction of the programme is said to reflect a proactive effort to support the Sarawak Government’s aspirations under the Hydrogen Economy agenda and the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.
“It is expected to play a key role in developing a skilled local workforce in alternative energy sources such as hydro and solar while promoting the adoption of clean technologies to reduce carbon emissions,” a statement said today.
Dean of FKPS Associate Professor Ts Dr Wong Tze Jin expressed pride over the faculty’s achievement, describing it as a testament to the university’s commitment to strengthening higher education and expanding into critical fields.
Meanwhile, Deputy Dean (Research, Funding and Postgraduate Studies) Dr Shairil Izwan Taasim said the programme is an excellent initiative aligned with the future needs of Sarawak, which is now focusing on renewable energy.
The enrolment of the first cohort marks a new phase for UPMS in strengthening its role as a higher education hub aligned with current socio-economic needs.
