Sarawak Moves To Reinforce Territorial Defence With Inaugural JPAWS Meeting
KUCHING: Sarawak has moved to strengthen its territorial defence framework with the inaugural meeting of the Sarawak Territorial Army Empowerment Committee (JPAWS) held on Tuesday, signalling a more coordinated push to enhance the state’s volunteer military force.
The meeting, chaired by Lt. Col (K) Dato Sri Dr Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel, marks a key step in the state government’s strategic effort to elevate the role and operational readiness of the Rejimen Askar Wataniah Sarawak as a critical pillar in safeguarding Sarawak’s security landscape.
In his remarks, Dato Sri Dr Muhammad Abdullah who is also the Deputy Sarawak Secretary (Economic Planning and Development), underscored the Sarawak Government’s continued commitment to advancing the development of the Sarawak Territorial Army Regiment, in line with the state’s growing strategic interests.
The state government maintains that JPAWS will serve as a catalyst in reinforcing the regiment’s capabilities, ultimately contributing to long-term security, stability and public well-being across Sarawak.
Central to the discussions were two priority thrusts, strengthening human capital and upgrading infrastructure, aimed at ensuring the force remains capable, responsive and future-ready.
Members also examined the urgent need to modernise existing facilities to support more effective and sustainable operational preparedness.
Among those present were JPAWS members representing state agencies, including Datu Awang Zamhari Awang Mahmood, Datu Ir Ts Dr Cassidy Morris (joining virtually), Datu Sharifah Rohana Datu Wan Alwi, Datu Ir Ts Awang Mohammad Fadillah Awang Redzuan and Lt. Col Lim Bih Wei.
Also in attendance representing the Territorial Army were Lt. Col Budiman Zainal, Deputy Commander of the 510 Territorial Army Regiment, and Lt. Col Khairul Aziz Abdullah, Deputy Commander of the 511 Territorial Army Regiment, who participated virtually. -UKASnews
