Sarawak Laksa Proves Its Excellence, Clinching Gold On International Stage
KUCHING: The success of local chefs from Kuching in the MasterChef of Foodex 2026 competition in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, proves the ability of Sarawakian gastronomy to compete globally, while simultaneously bringing pride to the state on the international stage.
The Mayor of Kuching South City Council (MBKS), Dato Wee Hong Seng, stated that the participation of the chef delegation from Kuching was not merely to compete, but succeeded in making a significant impact by winning various awards among 400 participants, including 300 from Vietnam and 100 international contestants.
“Our chefs did not merely participate in this competition, but successfully made a significant impact on the international stage,” he said during the MasterChef of Foodex 2026 press conference on Friday.
Among the most proud achievements was the gold medal won by Chef Lana Akam from Fairy Tavern through the iconic Sarawak Laksa dish, which highlighted a balance of flavours and the authenticity of a broth rich in local identity.
According to Dato Wee, the success proves that Sarawak Laksa is not just a popular dish, but a symbol of heritage capable of being showcased on a global level.
“When we talk about Kuching, we talk about food because it is a part of our identity,” he said.
In addition, Chef Janncy Nyohim contributed a bronze medal through an innovative nasi lemak featuring local ingredients such as torch ginger flower and traditional rice, reflecting the evolution of cuisine without neglecting its cultural roots.
Two other chefs from Little Fairy Cafe, Chef Nicky Nelson and Chef Robbie Richard Balcarek, each secured a silver medal, while in the group category, the Kuching team also brought home a silver, demonstrating the strength of collaboration within the local culinary community.
In other categories, Chef Benny Huang and Wilson Voon each earned silver medals, while Chef Ronald Bong achieved success with one bronze and one silver medal.
Kuching's success was further acknowledged on the international judging panel, as Chef Jordan and Chef Julian Lai were invited to serve as judges, reflecting the recognition of Sarawak's culinary expertise.
Dato Wee emphasised that these achievements further strengthen Kuching's position as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy and open up broader opportunities to promote the state's food diversity and heritage to the world.
“This shows that Kuching is not only known for its delicious food, but also for its excellence in the field of gastronomy,” he added.
He also expressed his appreciation to all the chefs involved and hoped that this success would serve as an inspiration for the younger generation to explore the culinary arts as a future career.
He added that MBKS remains committed to supporting the development of the gastronomy sector, as food is not just economic opportunities. -UKASnews
