KUCHING: Efforts to expand tree planting are being intensified as a key measure to reduce carbon emissions and accelerate the low-carbon city agenda in the state capital.
Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said urban greening initiatives are not merely symbolic activities, but an important intervention in addressing climate change and improving the quality of life of the community.
“Every tree we plant helps absorb carbon dioxide from the air. When there is too much carbon dioxide, it contributes to global warming,” he said.
He said this during a tree planting programme held in conjunction with the World Earth Day celebration here on Thursday.
A total of 68 trees were planted during the programme as part of ongoing efforts to make urban areas greener, cooler and more comfortable places to live.
“More trees mean cleaner air, a cooler environment and healthier living spaces,” he said.
At the same time, he disclosed that MBKS has planted between 2,000 and 3,000 trees over the past five years as part of its urban greening plan.
The initiative is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 15 (Life on Land).
In this regard, he urged the public to play an active role in environmental conservation efforts through responsible tree planting.
“Protecting the Earth is everyone’s responsibility and we must ensure the trees planted are suitable and do not harm the environment,” he said.
He added that continuous efforts through awareness programmes and on-the-ground initiatives are important to ensure urban greening efforts deliver long-term impact on community wellbeing and environmental sustainability. -UKASnews
