KCGCCI Raises RM51,000 To Support Nan Qiao Ji Gong Memorial Project
KUCHING: The Kuching Chinese General Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCGCCI) has raised RM51,000 in support of the construction of the Nan Qiao Ji Gong memorial through a project known as Pillars for Remembrance, which will be developed at the new Kuching South City Council (MBKS) building.
The funds were handed over by KCGCCI President Dato Tan Jit Kee to MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng during a cheque presentation ceremony held at the MBKS Building on Wednesday.
Also witnessing the presentation were the Deputy Mayor of MBKS Dato Zaiedi Suhail, President of the Sarawak Arts and Culture Research Institute Datuk David Teng Lung Chi, Secretary of KCGCCI Dato Jonathan Chai Voon Tok, Vice President of KCGCCI Fam Khing Foh and KCGCCI committee members.
Dato Wee said the memorial project is community-funded, with the overall cost estimated at RM500,000, and still requires additional financial support to complete construction.
According to him, the project was initiated to honour the Nanyang Volunteer Drivers and Mechanics, who once braved dangerous routes, transported essential supplies and repaired vehicles during one of the darkest chapters in world history.
“They were never in the public spotlight and never asked for recognition, yet their courage and sacrifice left a lasting impact.
“Today, we are ensuring that their story of service and sacrifice is not forgotten,” he said.
He expressed appreciation to KCGCCI for the funds raised, describing the effort as a reflection of a strong sense of responsibility towards history and the local community.
He added that cooperation from all parties is vital to ensure such historical legacies continue to be remembered by future generations. -UKASnews
