Gawai Dayak A Medium To Strengthen Unity & Preserve Heritage
SARIKEI: The Gawai Dayak celebration continues to play a vital role as an important medium in strengthening unity among Sarawak’s multi-racial society, while simultaneously preserving the cultural heritage that defines the state’s identity.
Deputy Minister for Plantation and Commodities and Member of Parliament for Sarikei Dato’ Sri Huang Tiong Sii emphasised that organising such celebrations is more than just an annual event; it is a manifestation of the harmony long established among the people.
According to him, Gawai Dayak does not only symbolise gratitude for a bountiful harvest but also serves as an essential platform for tightening social ties, reinforcing the values of mutual respect, and fostering a spirit of togetherness within the community.
In the meantime, he stressed the importance of continuous efforts to ensure that traditional customs and culture remain preserved, especially in facing increasingly complex global challenges.
“Cultural heritage should not merely be remembered; instead, it must continue to be practiced and empowered so that it remains relevant across generations,” he said while speaking at the Mantar Gawai Dayak 2026 Thanksgiving Dinner organised by the Sarikei Division Tuai Rumah Association at Dewan Sentral Sarikei on Thursday.
In this regard, Dato’ Sri Huang, who is also Repok Assemblyman, urged the younger generation to continue playing their role as cultural heirs through active involvement in the arts, mother tongues, and community activities.
He further asserted that the Gawai celebration reflects the spirit of consensus, mutual assistance, and moving forward as a united community. — UKASnews
