STEM Is The Key To Sarawak’s Future In Technology-Based Economy
KUCHING: The field of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) has now become a vital pathway to boost the participation of the Dayak community in high-tech economic sectors, in line with Sarawak's development agenda which focuses on hydrogen, green energy, and future innovation.
Minister for Education, Innovation, and Talent Development, Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, said that the mastery of STEM is crucial given that the state’s development direction is increasingly focused on science and technology-based industries.
According to him, Sarawak requires more local skilled manpower in professional and technical fields to support future economic growth.
“If we want to see ourselves progress rapidly, that is the only way,by giving serious attention to STEM education,” he said.
He said this while speaking at the Official Opening of the 11th Triennial General Assembly of the Dayak Bidayuh National Association (DBNA) and the DBNA Muhibbah Dinner at the DBNA Multipurpose Hall on Friday.
He added that although there is a target of 60 per cent of students in the STEM stream by 2030, the level of student participation, particularly from rural communities in that field, has not yet reached a satisfactory level.
Meanwhile, he explained that STEM education is not solely focused on university studies, but also encompasses Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), which is becoming increasingly important in the job market.
In this regard, he urged parents and the community to encourage more young people to enter STEM and technical fields to ensure the future generation is capable of competing in a technology-based economy.
Also present were Deputy Minister for Transport (Aviation and Road) Datuk Dr Jerip Susil, Deputy Minister for Transport (Riverine and Maritime) Datuk Henry Harry Jinep, Deputy Minister for Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Datuk Martin Ben, Member of Parliament for Puncak Borneo Datuk Willie Mongin, DBNA President Datuk Ik Pahon Joyik, as well as other invited guests. -UKASnews
