Pre-Gawai Strengthens Dayak Heritage & Community Harmony
SIBURAN: Pre-Gawai celebrations continue to serve as an essential medium for strengthening Dayak cultural heritage and preserving the multi-racial harmony that forms the core of Sarawak’s stability and unity.
Sarawak Deputy Minister for Transport (Aviation and Road) and Mambong Assemblyman Datuk Dr Jerip Susil said that Gawai is more than just an annual festival; it is a symbol of the Dayak community's identity and self-worth that must be preserved and passed down to the younger generation.
He noted that the community's efforts to showcase cultural performances, complete with traditional attire, dances, and custom, reflect a continuous commitment to upholding ethnic identity in Sarawak.
“Cultural heritage, language, and traditional costumes are the foundations of the Dayak identity and must be continuously protected so they are not lost to time,” he said during the 2026 Pre-Gawai Dinner organised by the Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) of Kampung Batu Gong Lama at the Siburan Community Hall on Saturday.
Meanwhile, he also emphasised the importance of empowering mother tongues through the education system, including the teaching of the Iban language in schools and efforts to introduce the Bidayuh language according to local dialects.
He added that Sarawak remains the finest example of harmony among diverse races and religions, as every festival is celebrated together regardless of background.
“Unity is the foundation of the state’s stability and progress. With the spirit of segulai sejalai, we can build a better future for everyone,” he remarked.
As a gesture of support for community development, he announced an allocation of RM30,000 to JKKK Kampung Batu Gong Lama to carry out welfare activities and development for the residents.-UKASnews
