KUCHING: Sarawak’s bold move into the hydrogen economy is beginning to bear fruit, as the price per litre of hydrogen is reportedly cheaper than diesel, proving that the state's green energy transition strategy is on the right track.
Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, stated that although the initiative to introduce hydrogen previously faced various criticisms and skepticism, current economic developments show that the state cannot continue to rely on a single energy source alone.
“When I first introduced hydrogen, I faced criticism and doubtful views because many were skeptical that the price of hydrogen would be much more expensive.
“Ladies and gentlemen, look at today where, if we compare the price of diesel to hydrogen, one litre of hydrogen is cheaper than diesel,” he explained.
He said this while speaking at the Sarawak State Level Labour Day 2026 Celebration at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here on Sunday.
According to him, this success proves that the courage to explore new technologies and economic resources is capable of opening up greater opportunities for Sarawak's future.
In the meantime, Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari also urged Sarawakians to be brave in challenging norms and seizing new opportunities emerging alongside the changing global economic landscape.
“We must be brave, and I know the children of Sarawak are indeed brave; however, do not be brave recklessly, but use your intellect by taking ‘calculated risks’ and being rational,” he added.
He further noted that a bold approach based on strategic considerations is vital to ensuring Sarawak remains competitive and capable of emerging as a leader in the green economy and future energy in the region. — UKASnews
