Proposal To Establish Extensive Flood Mitigation Master Plan For Bintulu Submitted
KUCHING: A formal request has been made to the Sarawak Government to establish an extensive Flood Mitigation Master Plan for Bintulu, ensuring a permanent and sustainable strategy to resolve the division's ongoing flash flood challenges.
Tanjong Batu Assemblyman Johnny Pang Leong Ming highlighted the emotional strain caused by natural disasters, noting that the extreme flood events in February 2025 has resulted in a deep and enduring effect on local residents.
“The people are now in phobia - whenever the sky turns dark, many residents start asking: will it flood again? Will the water rise again? Will our homes be safe tonight?” he said.
He said this when debating the Motion of Appreciation on the address delivered by the Sarawak Governor during the 19th Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) Sitting on Thursday.
While existing maintenance and local upgrades are appreciated, Johnny Pang noted that Bintulu must transition from reactive, piecemeal fixes to a comprehensive Master Plan to effectively address its complex urban challenges.
"While routine maintenance continues to play its part, a more holistic and integrated Master Plan is essential to synchronise the efforts of all authorities and developers in overcoming Bintulu’s urban flooding issues.
“This master plan should look into drainage capacity, river flow, retention ponds, tidal influence, land development, climate change impact, early warning systems and inter-agency coordination,” he emphasised.-UKASnews
