Sarawak Strengthens Flood Mitigation Through 45 New Projects Under 13MP
KUCHING: The Sarawak Government continues to strengthen the state's preparedness against flood risks through the implementation of 45 flood mitigation and urban drainage projects worth RM265.29 million under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP).
Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian said the allocation reflects the state government's commitment to empowering flood mitigation infrastructure in a more comprehensive and sustainable manner.
According to him, the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) Sarawak will prioritise the implementation of high-impact projects to ensure the continuity of water management and urban drainage infrastructure development throughout the state.
“The Sarawak Government is committed to strengthening the state's preparedness, adaptability and resilience through the integrated implementation of water resource management, urban drainage and flood mitigation projects,” he said.
He said this during his ministerial winding-up session at the 19th Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting on Tuesday.
Datuk Amar Dr Sim added that out of the total projects approved under 13MP, 15 projects are currently in the construction phase, while another 30 projects are at the design and procurement preparation stage.
He noted that this integrated approach is crucial to reducing flood risks, protecting local communities and ensuring state development continues sustainably in line with Sarawak's long-term development agenda.
In a related development, the Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government shared that under 12MP, DID Sarawak received an allocation of RM97.35 million to implement 24 flood mitigation and urban drainage projects across the state.
According to him, of that total, three projects have been fully completed, one project is under construction, while another 20 projects are at various stages of design before physical execution is carried out in phases starting from 2026. -UKASnews
