Agong's Birthday Celebration In Betong Brings People Closer To Royal Institutions
KUCHING: The 2026 Sarawak-Level Official Birthday Celebration of His Majesty Seri Paduka Baginda the Yang di-Pertuan Agong XVII in Betong is not just an annual official event, but also serves as an important platform in strengthening the people's appreciation of the institution of the constitutional monarchy and the spirit of patriotism.
Minister in the Sarawak Premier's Department and Minister-In-Charge Dato Sri John Sikie Tayai said that the organisation of the state-level celebration provides an opportunity for the community, particularly in rural areas, to better understand the role of the nation’s royal institutions through various interesting and educational content.
According to him, the selection of Betong as the host also allows the local community to experience the excitement of a state-scale celebration, which was previously held more in major cities.
"Betong was chosen because we want the community in rural areas to also experience the excitement of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's Birthday Celebration and understand the nation’s royal institutional system," he said.
He said this when he was a guest at the Juh Randau programme organised by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) regarding the 2026 Sarawak-Level 17th Birthday Celebration of His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on Thursday.
Dato Sri John Sikie added that various programmes have been scheduled throughout the celebration including Betong Kitchen, the Raja Kita Exhibition, an interfaith thanksgiving ceremony, a tea party and a Konsert Rakyat.
"Through this exhibition, the people, especially the younger generation, can understand the history and system of the royal institution in our nation," he said.
He said that Betong Kitchen, which brings together 26 local food stalls, is expected to be one of the main attractions of the celebration in addition to opening up opportunities for small traders to generate income throughout the programme.
In addition, the Raja Kita Exhibition, which will take place from 11 to 14 June, is expected to attract more than 10,000 visitors including school students to provide exposure to the country's history and royal institutions.
Meanwhile, Betong Division Resident Datu Richard Michael Abunawas said that various preparations have been made to ensure the smooth running of the celebration including aspects of logistics, security and cleanliness.
According to him, close cooperation between government agencies and local communities is the main strength in the success of the state-wide celebration.
“Opportunities like this can also help small traders and local entrepreneurs generate income and introduce their products to visitors,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Konsert Rakyat scheduled for 14 June is expected to be the highlight of the celebration with various performances by local artists as well as a fireworks display to enliven the atmosphere.
The organisation of the celebration is not only a symbol of respect for the royal institution, but is also expected to continue to strengthen the spirit of patriotism, unity and harmony of the people of Sarawak through the involvement of people of various walks of life throughout the programme. -UKASnews
