Gawai Visiting Tradition Reflects Harmony Among Sarawak's Diverse Communities
SARIKEI: The tradition of visiting family, friends and neighbours during the Gawai Dayak celebration continues to symbolise harmony and unity among Sarawak's multicultural communities.
Deputy Minister of Plantation and Commodities and Member of Parliament for Sarikei, Dato Sri Huang Tiong Sii, said the Dayak and Iban communities are well known for their friendliness and openness in welcoming visitors from various ethnic backgrounds, particularly during festive seasons.
According to him, the practice of mutual visits among the Dayak, Chinese and other communities during Gawai Dayak celebrations reflects the spirit of unity and harmony that has long been a defining characteristic of the people of Sarawak.
“The tradition of returning to one's village and longhouse not only strengthens family ties but also symbolises the values of unity, love and respect for cultural heritage, which must continue to be preserved and passed on to future generations,” he said during visits to several longhouses in the Ulu Paoh and Ulu Minus areas ahead of the Gawai Dayak celebration on Saturday.
In conjunction with the festive celebration, he also presented assistance involving 260 Door Projects to the committees of the participating longhouses as part of efforts to improve the well-being of local residents.
Among the longhouses visited in the Ulu Paoh area were Rumah Taka Jabu, Rumah Rampoo Paing, Rumah Jalang Ambas, Rumah Kiong Rangi and Rumah Ningkang Jungan.
In the Ulu Minus area, he visited Rumah Ibik Aji, Rumah Setia Ungok and Rumah Sigan Kiam. -UKASnews
