MATU: The Matu Festival 2026, which runs for five days from 2 to 6 June, kicked off with a variety of engaging activities for the community, while the Matu Mini Regatta emerged as one of the main attractions, drawing visitors from various areas.
Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Integrity and Ombudsman) and Jemoreng Assemblyman, Datuk Dr Juanda Jaya, officiated the festival at a ceremony held in Matu Town on Tuesday.
The launch was marked by the symbolic release of a boat, signifying the commencement of the Matu Festival 2026, organised by the Matu District Office.
The Mini Regatta, held on the first day of the festival, captured the attention of local residents and visitors alike, who gathered to watch the boat race, which remains one of the traditional events in the area.
Following the opening ceremony, Datuk Dr Juanda also visited the sales booths and community stalls, which comprised a total of 105 commercial lots.
The festive atmosphere was further enlivened by the large turnout of visitors, many of whom took the opportunity to attend during the public holiday period, reflecting strong community support for the annual event.
Throughout the festival, a wide range of programmes has been scheduled, including stage performances, sports competitions, agency exhibitions, community activities and various forms of entertainment suitable for all age groups.
Also present were Matu District Officer Hamidah Halpi, Mukah Division Acting Resident Representative Mohd Amirul Valentine Laiseh, and Pemanca Mesaleh @ Che’Jeni Shahdan. -UKASnews
