Sarawak Government Allocates RM10 Million To Support Independent Chinese Secondary Schools
KUCHING: The Sarawak Government’s continued commitment to strengthening the development of diverse education streams was reaffirmed through the allocation of grants totalling RM10 million to Independent Chinese Secondary Schools (ICSS) in the state.
The allocation was presented by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg during a courtesy call by a delegation from the Sarawak United Association of Private Chinese Secondary School Management Board at the Satria Pertiwi Complex on Monday.
The delegation was led by its Chairman Temenggong Dato Vincent Lau Lee Ming, accompanied by Deputy Chairman Dato Sri Richard Wee Liang Chiat, Treasurer Dato Seri Song Tiing Seng and Assistant Secretary-General Kuang Wei Hua.
The initiative reflects the Sarawak Government’s inclusive policy of recognising the role of all education streams in producing quality human capital and contributing to the development of the state and the nation.
Since 2014, the state government has consistently provided annual financial assistance to the schools, with total allocations reaching RM102 million over the past 13 years.
The increase in annual funding from RM3 million to RM10 million has also helped ease the financial burden on school management boards while ensuring the continued development of these education institutions.
During the courtesy call, the delegation expressed appreciation for the state government’s ongoing support, describing it as a catalyst for academic excellence and the production of competitive graduates.
The support is also aligned with Sarawak’s commitment to education equity across all streams, including through the implementation of the Sarawak Free Tertiary Education Scheme (FTES), which has benefited thousands of students.
As of the first quarter of 2026, a total of 4,694 students had benefited from the scheme, including 94 holders of the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) from independent Chinese secondary schools who received full sponsorship of their tuition fees. -UKASnews
