KUCHING: Demand for the medical programme at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) remains high, but the number of students eligible to receive the Yayasan Sarawak Special Scholarship for the Medical Programme is still limited due to the set eligibility requirements.
Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee, said the special scholarship is not given automatically and applicants need to meet several pre-determined criteria.
He said that for last year's intake, 105 out of 150 students admitted into the UNIMAS medical programme were Sarawakians, reflecting strong interest among local students in the field.
"Yayasan Sarawak has a special grant for Sarawak medical students, but the number of students eligible to receive the assistance is not large because there are certain criteria that need to be met," he said.
He said this at a press conference announcing the STPM 2025 results here on Friday.
Datuk Dr Annuar said the interview process for this year's UNIMAS medical programme intake is still ongoing, and the official figures for the admission of Sarawakian students have not yet been finalised.
He added that the initiative is among the Sarawak government's efforts to help more locals further their studies in the medical field as well as meet the healthcare workforce needs in Sarawak. -UKASnews
