SIBU: Sarawak is exploring strategic cooperation with Singapore in the fields of carbon trading and seawater processing technology to unlock new investment and partnership opportunities between both parties.

Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, explained that cooperation in carbon, among other things, involves carbon storage and trading activities in line with commitments under the Paris Agreement.

According to him, this step is taken considering that Singapore is a rapidly developing country that also generates carbon dioxide emissions.

“So, this means they want to look for a market based on carbon trading. This is guided by the Paris Agreement to address the country's carbon emissions," he said.

He said this when met by reporters after officiating the 18th Sarawak United National Youth Organisation (SABERKAS) Triennial General Meeting in Sibu on Sunday.

Apart from the carbon trading issue, Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari also informed that Sarawak and Singapore are looking at the potential use of new technology to purify seawater.

However, he emphasised that discussions on the matter are still at an exploratory stage and have not been finalised.

“There is already technology capable of purifying seawater. We will monitor the progress of these discussions according to future water supply needs.
