KUCHING: The presence of HMI Medical through the development of a new hospital in Kuching reflects investor confidence in Sarawak's potential as a strategic destination for quality healthcare, innovation, and human capital development.

Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg said that the development of the new hospital represents an investment in healthcare infrastructure and capacity, while skills and workforce development funds constitute an investment in human capital.

“Together, both send a clear message that Sarawak is no longer viewed merely as an emerging market, but as a strategic destination where world-class healthcare services, international investments, and local talent can thrive together,” he said.

He said this when delivering his speech at the Groundbreaking Ceremony of HMI Medical Regency Specialist Hospital Kuching at The NorthBank, Tabuan, here on Monday.

Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari added that Sarawak aims to become a regional hub for advanced healthcare, medical education, biomedical research, and digital health innovation.

He noted that achieving this goal requires collaboration among the government, industry, universities, research institutions, and technology providers, thereby making HMI Medical’s investment significant to the development of the state's healthcare sector.

He remarked that HMI Medical's presence proves that Sarawak's transformation is attracting strategic partners who are ready to invest for the long term.

“Sarawak possesses the economic foundation to support world-class healthcare, driven by the conviction that our people deserve access to quality medical services closer to home for generations to come,” he explained.

The 300-bed capacity hospital will be developed in two phases, with the first phase involving an investment of over RM400 million, while the subsequent phase will involve expanding the hospital's capacity.

Among the facilities to be provided are a comprehensive Cancer Centre, smart wards, and advanced operating theatres with intensive care, diagnostic, and treatment amenities that support multidisciplinary specialist care.

Expected to be launched in 2029, the hospital will also provide dedicated amenities for patients and visitors from near and far.

Also present were Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian, Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, Mayor of Kuching South City Council Dato Wee Hong Seng and Group Chief Executive Officer of HMI Medical Chin Wei Jia, alongside other dignitaries. — UKASnews
