KUCHING: Sarawak continues to strengthen its medical tourism sector by emphasising the development of the healthcare ecosystem, tropical disease research, and follow-up care facilities to attract more medical tourists from the ASEAN region.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg noted that over 100,000 medical tourists were recorded visiting Sarawak in 2025 to seek medical treatment, in addition to enjoying the ecosystem offered by the state.
“The Sarawak Government is investing in connectivity aspects, and I believe this hospital will be able to reach ASEAN member countries.
“We are located at the heart of ASEAN, and I am confident that those seeking good medical treatment at your hospital are most welcome to come to Kuching,” he said.
He said this when delivering his speech at the Groundbreaking Ceremony of HMI Medical Regency Specialist Hospital Kuching at The NorthBank, Tabuan, here on Monday.
In a press conference following the event, the Sarawak Premier stated that the state government will continue implementing infrastructure development, not only in terms of air connectivity, but also domestic connectivity.
According to him, the construction of Regency Specialist Hospital built by HMI Medical is located near the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) station at The NorthBank, thereby making it convenient for the public to access treatment.
In addition, he explained that Sarawak is also focusing on follow-up treatment with facilities currently being developed in the Sabal Forest and in the Damai Peninsula coastal area.
“All these locations are within a 45-minute distance from The NorthBank, and I think this will provide a special incentive for patients seeking treatment in Sarawak.
“On behalf of Sarawak, I express my gratitude to HMI Medical for your decision and confidence in our environment,” he remarked.
The Sarawak Premier also urged HMI Medical to collaborate with the tropical disease research center in Sarawak, which has also received a state government investment of RM300 million, including for medical training at renowned medical hospitals worldwide to elevate standard practices in the state. — UKASnews
