KUCHING: The younger generation is urged to explore the chronology of Malaysia's formation through the ‘history tunnel’ exhibition at Plaza Merdeka, in order to understand and appreciate the history of the nation's establishment on 16 September, 1963.

Sarawak Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, stated that the exhibition offers an opportunity for the post-1963 generation to witness firsthand the journey of Malaysia's formation, a nation that has now reached the age of 63.

“To the people of Sarawak, especially the youth born after '63, please visit the exhibition site in our history tunnel and view the chronological journey of Malaysia's establishment step-by-step, as not many are aware of how the nation was formed,” he said.

He said this during a press conference held in conjunction with the Malaysia Day Celebration Exhibition at the Main Atrium of Plaza Merdeka here on Monday.

Dato Sri Abdul Karim explained that the formation of Malaysia in 1963 involved the union of Malaya, Sabah, Sarawak, and Singapore, prior to Singapore's departure in 1965, making 16 September a highly significant date for all citizens.

According to him, the content and details within the history tunnel were realised through the collaboration of the Ministry of Communications with Federal-level agencies and the Sarawak Government.

In a related development, he announced that the 2026 National-Level Malaysia Day Celebration would take place at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) on the night of 16 September.

The highlight event will be attended by the Sarawak Governor Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg and Chief Minister of Sabah Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor.

In this regard, Dato Sri Abdul Karim urged those unable to attend in person to watch the live television broadcast and join in celebrating this historic moment from home.

He also expressed his deepest appreciation to the Ministry of Communications and all Federal and state agencies involved in making this year's Malaysia Day celebration a success.
