UNIMAS Students Urged To Become Job Creators, Not Just Job Seekers
KOTA SAMARAHAN: New students at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) have been urged to change their perspective by not viewing themselves merely as job seekers after graduation, but instead developing a mindset of becoming job creators.
Deputy Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (KUSKOP), Datuk Mohamad Alamin, said a degree was not an absolute guarantee of securing employment, and students therefore needed to equip themselves with skills, experience, the courage to take risks and an entrepreneurial mindset throughout their studies.
He said this when delivering the Tokoh Inspirational Talk in conjunction with the 2026 UNIMAS Student Welcoming Ceremony (MAP) here on Tuesday.
He said students should have the courage to explore high-potential fields such as the digital economy, artificial intelligence (AI), creative economy, blue economy and high-value industries, which offered strong prospects for the future.
Meanwhile, he said KUSKOP was prepared to explore collaboration with UNIMAS in providing entrepreneurial exposure and training to students, including assisting those who needed support to start businesses.
He said leadership and self-development should begin with individuals themselves, including the ability to manage time and finances, maintain daily discipline and uphold the values of integrity and honesty.
In this regard, students were encouraged to take the opportunity to join associations, co-curricular activities, community programmes, student exchange programmes and various personal development activities to broaden their experience and build networks.
He also urged students to keep abreast of current developments at national and international levels to better prepare themselves for changes in the world and identify new opportunities that could be leveraged.
At the same time, students were reminded to exercise their freedom responsibly, respect the law and appreciate the diversity of backgrounds among the UNIMAS community.
Datuk Mohamad said students were future leaders and should make the most of their time at university to develop their potential, sharpen their leadership and entrepreneurial skills, and build networks that could support the development of Sarawak and Malaysia. -UKASnews
