Cross-Clan Singing Competition Strengthens Community Unity In Miri
MIRI: The Miri Clan Association Singing Competition 2026 strengthened ties among various clan associations in Miri through a shared platform that also opened up opportunities for youth to actively participate in community activities.
Sarawak Minister of Transport, who is also Senadin Assemblyman Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, said the cross-clan concept applied in the competition allowed members from various associations to gather, interact and strengthen friendships without being confined by clan differences.
He said music can serve as a medium to unite the community, as shared activities give participants the opportunity to get to know one another and build closer relationships.
"Different clans do not stop us from becoming friends; different cultures also do not stop us from becoming a family. This is the Sarawak spirit that we always cherish," he said.
He said this while officiating the Miri Clan Association Singing Competition 2026 at Boulevard Shopping Mall, here, on Saturday.
He said the organising of cross-clan activities is also in line with Sarawak's spirit of diversity, home to communities of various races, religions, cultures and languages who continue to live together based on mutual respect and tolerance.
Meanwhile, Dato Sri Lee also emphasised the importance of involving the younger generation in clan association activities to ensure the continuity of these organisations and the preservation of cultural heritage.
He said activities such as music, sports, cultural exchange and welfare initiatives can provide a platform for youth to get involved, plan programmes and showcase new talents and ideas.
He also expressed appreciation for the role of Chinese associations, clan associations and community associations in Miri, which not only look after the welfare of their members and preserve cultural heritage, but also contribute to strengthening ties within the local community.
The competition was organised by the Yap Clan Association Miri together with its Youth Bureau, with participation from various clan associations in Miri.
Also present was Kapitan Aries Leong Chin Lim, representing Sarawak Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, who is also Piasau Assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew. -UKASnews
