Sarawak Set To Host WRO 2027 International Robotics Championship
KUCHING: Sarawak is set to host the World Robot Olympiad (WRO) Open Championship 2027, which will serve as a platform for young local talents to showcase their capabilities in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) as well as robotics on the international stage.
Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn said hosting the prestigious championship reflects the rapid growth of the state's STEM and robotics ecosystem.
“Hosting the WRO Open Championship 2027 will offer valuable opportunities to highlight Sarawak's local talent globally, alongside welcoming participation from students, educators, coaches, and robotics enthusiasts worldwide,” he said.
He said this when delivering his ministry's winding-up speech at the 19th Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) Sitting on Monday.
According to him, Sarawak boasts an enviable track record, having emerged as the overall champion of the National Robotics Competition (NRC) 10 times between 2014 and 2025.
Furthermore, he noted that this year recorded the highest participation rate yet, with 256 teams representing Sarawak in the NRC, positioning the state as the third-highest nationally in terms of entries.
He also expressed pride in the achievements of SMK Chung Hua (CF) Miri and SJK(C) Chung Hua Krokop, both of which will represent Malaysia at the WRO Finals in Puerto Rico this December following their stellar national performance.
Additionally, he shared that Borneo International School brought honor to Sarawak by securing second place globally in the RoboMission Junior category at the WRO Open Championship Europe in Croatia last week.
These achievements, he explained, prove the capability of young Sarawakian talents to compete on a global level, thereby solidifying the state's position as a leader in national STEM and robotics development. — UKASnews
