UNIMAS To Nurture Local Talent, Drive Sarawak’s Economic Growth
KOTA SAMARAHAN: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) has the potential to play a greater role in driving Sarawak’s future economy through the development of highly skilled human capital, research and technological innovation.
Sarawak Governor and UNIMAS Chancellor Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said mastery of knowledge and technology was essential to ensuring the state’s abundant natural resources could be fully utilised to generate added value and create new economic opportunities.
“Abundant natural resources alone will not guarantee Sarawak’s future progress.
“Instead, that progress will be determined by how well we can master knowledge, develop technology and produce human capital capable of adding value to the resources we possess,” he said.
He said this when delivering his address at the First Session of the 30th UNIMAS Convocation Ceremony at Dewan Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra (DeTAR Putra), UNIMAS, on Monday.
Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi said sectors such as renewable energy, semiconductor technology, artificial intelligence and the digital economy offered opportunities for the younger generation to develop expertise and lead high-technology industries.
In this regard, he urged students and graduates to equip themselves with relevant knowledge and skills, including through professional training and continuous learning.
“We must not merely produce graduates to meet the needs of today's economy.
“We need to nurture a generation capable of anticipating change, mastering new knowledge and shaping the economy of the future,” he stressed.
He also expressed hope that UNIMAS would continue to strengthen its academic programmes, research and collaboration with the Government and industry to produce local talent capable of competing at the international level.
The First Session was also attended by Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, UNIMAS Board of Directors Chairman Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Sulong Matjeraie, members of the UNIMAS Executive Committee, Deputy Vice-Chancellors and members of the University's Board of Directors. -UKASnews
