MIRI: The Sarawak government will study a proposal to develop a link road of about 200 kilometres (km) in the Baram area, utilising existing logging road routes to expand connectivity in the interior.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg said the proposal, put forward by Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier's Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring) Datuk Gerawat Gala, involves a route traversing the Baram area, including around Lapok.
"What Datuk Gerawat proposed is for us to look at the existing logging roads. It will cross the Baram area, where Lapok Road is located.
"So, what has been proposed, we can consider, and it would become a road artery that can connect the 3M2L road," he said.
He said this to reporters after officiating the Orang Ulu Cultural Centre of the Federation of Orang Ulu Associations Sarawak Malaysia (FORUM) on Saturday.
According to him, the proposal is in line with the Sarawak government's efforts to strengthen road infrastructure networks in the Baram area up to Belaga, in order to enhance connectivity and support the long-term development of the interior.
However, he stressed that further study must be carried out to determine the suitability of the alignment and the development requirements before any decision is made. -UKASnews
