Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Sworn In As Speaker Of The Sarawak Legislative Assembly For The 10th Term
KUCHING: Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nasar has taken the oath of office as Speaker of the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) for the 10th term, effective from 16 November 2025 until 15 November 2027.
The reinstatement ceremony was carried out before the Sarawak Governor, Tun Pehin Sri Dr. Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, during an official event held at the Astana Negeri Sarawak on Tuesday.
Also present to witness the solemn occasion were the wife of the Sarawak Governor, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, along with the Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg.
Among those in attendance were the Sarawak Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas; members of the Sarawak Cabinet; Sarawak Secretary, Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki; Deputy Ministers; the Deputy Speaker of the DUN, Dato Idris Buang; as well as department heads and senior state government officials.
This appointment solidifies Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia’s position as the longest-serving Speaker of any State Legislative Assembly in Malaysia, having first assumed the role on 15 November 2000.
His continuous service of more than two decades has made him one of the most seasoned legislative figures in the country’s administrative history.
In the realm of state politics and governance, he previously served as the Assemblyman for Kuala Rajang and Serdeng/Semop, and held the position of Deputy Speaker of the Sarawak DUN (1995–2000) before being appointed Speaker.
Since 2002, he has also served as the Permanent Chairman of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) and Chairman of the PBB Constitutional Committee.
From a professional standpoint, Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Leeds, England, and is a Barrister-at-Law of the Inner Temple, London.
He further obtained a postgraduate qualification in Port and Shipping Management from the University of Wales, Cardiff.
He began his career as Legal Advisor to the Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (1974–1976) before practising as an Advocate and Solicitor from 1976 to 2000.
In addition, he has held notable positions in the corporate and media sectors, including Chairman of Interfinance Berhad (1980–1991) and Editor-in-Chief of The Sarawak Tribune (1990–2000).
Since 2002, he has also served as the Permanent Chairman of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) and Chairman of the PBB Constitutional Committee.
His reappointment for the tenth term reflects the state government’s confidence in his leadership, extensive experience, and steadfast commitment in steering Sarawak’s highest legislative institution. -UKASnews
