SEDC Driving Sarawak’s Growth, Supports Green Agenda
KUCHING: The Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) continues to stand out as one of the state’s key growth drivers, thanks to a range of strategic projects that not only reinforce Sarawak’s green economy ambitions but also elevate premium tourism and strengthen the development of new industries.
Its Chairman, Tan Sri Datuk Amar (Dr) Abdul Aziz Dato Husain, highlighted that the energy sector has shown encouraging progress through green hydrogen initiatives under SEDC Energy, aligning with Sarawak’s aspiration to build a low-carbon economy.
“The Mega Methanol Plant in Bintulu, developed under Sarawak Petchem and launched in 2024, also serves as a testament to the strength of Sarawak’s industrial capabilities in delivering world-class, large-scale projects.
“In addition, Sarawak Metro’s hydrogen-powered Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) system is set to become another national milestone, with operations expected to begin soon,” he said.
He shared these remarks during SEDC’s Corporate Dinner held here on Friday.
Gracing the event was the Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg.
Tan Sri Abdul Aziz noted that within the tourism and hospitality sector, SEDC continues to strengthen its presence through its network of hotels, which includes Riverside Majestic, Grand Margherita, Damai Lagoon Resort and Damai Beach Resort.
He added that SEDC’s majority ownership of the Mulu Marriott Resort & Spa further enhances its portfolio in the premium tourism segment.
“Meanwhile, through Hemisphere Corporation, SEDC has also taken over the management of the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) beginning March this year, which further reinforces Sarawak’s potential as a leading MICE destination in the region,” he added.
SEDC has also recorded progress in the agriculture sector, including the production of high-quality animal feed, the development of insect-based protein and organic fertiliser, the management of 12 major quarries across Sarawak, and various infrastructure ventures such as the construction of the Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud Bridge and its involvement in the Pan Borneo Highway.
Tan Sri Abdul Aziz added that the Damai Peninsula Masterplan remains a flagship development, featuring exclusive villas, luxury condominiums and a cruise terminal that is expected to be completed by 2030.
This is being supported by the construction of the dual-carriageway to Damai, which is currently underway under SEDC.
Also present were the Sarawak Secretary, Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, Sarawak Financial Secretary, Dato Sri Dr Wan Lizozman Wan Omar, Sarawak Attorney-General, Dato Sri Saferi Ali, Deputy Ministers, SEDC General Manager, Datu Abdul Hadi Datuk Abdul Kadir, and other distinguished guests. -UKASnews
