KUCHING: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has launched a pilot ESG Smart Poles project to enhance public health awareness, safety and environmental management in public parks, marking a significant step in the city’s smart and sustainable development efforts.
The launch ceremony was officiated by Sarawak Deputy Premier and Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government, Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian on Saturday, reflecting strong state-level support for people-focused and environmentally responsible urban initiatives.
MBKS Mayor, Dato Wee Hong Seng, said the initiative aims to make environmental information more accessible to the public, particularly through the open display of real-time air quality data to support healthier and safer outdoor activities.
“With the launch of our ESG Smart Poles, we are making the invisible visible by providing clear and real-time information on air quality so that everyone can make better and safer choices for their health,” he said.
He stressed that the project goes beyond technology, focusing instead on people, families and communities who regularly use public parks for exercise, recreation and social interaction.
Dato Wee noted that the ESG Smart Poles project was previously showcased at the 2025 International Mayor Forum in Toyota City, Japan, where Kuching shared its practical application of environmental, social and governance principles with city leaders from around the world.
“Today, what was shared on the international stage is becoming a reality here at home in Sarawak,” he added.
The pilot phase involves the installation of two ESG Smart Poles at Kuching Park and the Marine Park, making MBKS the first local authority in Kuching to openly display real-time air quality information in public parks.
The smart poles monitor air quality indicators such as PM2.5, carbon dioxide levels, temperature and humidity, while also being equipped with CCTV cameras and panic buttons to help park users make informed decisions and enhance public safety.
The system is integrated with MBKS platforms including i-PICO and i-BIVAC, with all data linked to the MBKS Smart City Command Centre to support better analysis of cleanliness, waste management and air quality, as well as faster and more effective city planning and response.
Dato Wee also expressed appreciation to PlanMalaysia for funding the installation of the smart poles, describing it as a strong example of cooperation between federal agencies and local councils in delivering tangible benefits to the public.
He added that the initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in promoting good health and wellbeing, sustainability, climate action and strong governance, while ultimately improving the quality of life for Kuching residents. -UKASnews
