UCSI Sarawak Launches CPUCE, Expands Access To Higher Education Through APEL Pathway
KUCHING: UCSI University Sarawak Campus is taking proactive measures in its efforts to strengthen the state's human capital development through the launch of the Centre for Pre-University & Continuing Education (CPUCE) and the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) path.
Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn said the initiative aims to expand access to higher education, especially for the working class through the recognition of industry experience.
He added that the implementation of the initiative is also in line with the Sarawak Government's aspiration to strengthen talent and human capital development as the foundation for sustainable economic growth.
He further explained that the effort is very important as Sarawak moves towards an economy based on innovation, technology and high value that requires a skilled and competitive workforce.
"APEL opens up a new path for skilled workers who have, extensive experience but do not have formal academic qualifications to further their studies.
"The recognition of experiential learning allows individuals to convert work experience into academic qualifications, thus increasing career advancement opportunities.
“Through APEL, work experience can be translated into academic recognition, thus opening up more opportunities for workers to improve their qualifications and career mobility,” he said during the launch ceremony on Tuesday.
Dato Sri Roland Sagah added that the initiative aims to expand access to higher education for the working class through the recognition of industry experience.
He explained that the initiative is also in line with the Sarawak Government’s aspiration to strengthen talent and human capital development as the foundation for sustainable economic growth, especially as the state moves towards an economy based on innovation, technology and high value.
“When the government, universities and industry move in tandem, we can create a stronger talent development ecosystem and ensure that educational programmes are truly in line with economic needs,” he said.
Meanwhile, UCSI University Sarawak Campus Pro Vice-Chancellor Mukvinder Sandhu said the establishment of CPUCE provides a more flexible education pathway by allowing work experience and professional skills to be recognised as academic qualifications through APEL.
CPUCE Director Irene Foo Ping Ping described the centre as also opening up opportunities for individuals and organisations to explore education in the fields of business, management, and hospitality and tourism. -UKASnews
