Public Transport Must Be Prioritised To Address Global Crisis Challenges
KUCHING: Public transport must be given serious attention as a vital step in addressing global challenges, including supply uncertainties and over-reliance on oil and gas.
Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor, Dato Wee Hong Seng, stated that the issue requires a comprehensive solution.
He expressed confidence that the leadership of Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, will devise the best approach to tackle these challenges.
“He (the Sarawak Premier) also mentioned that all government departments and relevant parties need to think about this matter seriously.
“We need to look at how we want to handle all these challenges because I am sure there are still many options we can consider, and it is not too late to act.
“I think this is a lesson we need to take because when all parties are affected, we hope that one day we will successfully have our own options and no longer rely too heavily on supplies from external parties," he said.
He made these remarks when met by reporters after the Virtual Earth Hour 2026 at Friendship Park here on Saturday.
Dato Wee emphasised that the current situation should serve as a lesson for Sarawak to build its own capabilities rather than remaining overly dependent on external supplies, which can have a significant impact during global disruptions or uncertainties.
He added that whenever supply disruptions or unforeseen circumstances occur, the effects are felt directly by the people; therefore, Sarawak must be prepared with more stable and sustainable options for the future. — UKASnews
