Concerns Over Rising Fuel Prices Drive Public Towards Frugality
KUCHING: Geopolitical uncertainties in the Middle East, which have the potential to influence global oil prices, are beginning to be felt by the public, thereby prompting them to take frugal measures in managing daily expenditure and transport costs.
This development is seen as being closely linked to the global situation, which has the potential to disrupt the oil supply chain, thereby impacting fuel prices and the cost of living.
Private sector employee Yazid Ibrahim, 31, stated that as a consumer who uses a vehicle daily to commute to work, the matter is indeed worrying as it will increase the cost of living.
According to him, the rise in fuel prices also creates a knock-on effect of the prices of goods.
“When transport costs rise, traders will also increase their selling prices, and ultimately, it is the consumers who will be affected. Therefore, we really do need to save and be more cautious with our spending,” he said when met by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) on Friday.
A student, Austin Carlos Bos, 26, also admitted that changes in fuel prices have been a direct impact on his daily routine.
He stated that measures such as planning journeys and reducing non-essential activities have now become a priority.
“If previously I travelled frequently, now these trips will perhaps be reduced, with more focus placed on essential spending only,” he added.
Echoing the same statement, 27-year old teacher, Abdul Ilya’sa Azman, said the need to plan journeys has now become a priority, alongside reducing non-essential expenditure.
Among the important measures to address this energy crisis is for us to plan our journeys, specifically by prioritizing travel that is essential or necessary in terms of required costs.
“Furthermore, we need to review our budgets by reducing entertainment and such, as well as prioritizing essentials only,” he explained.
Meanwhile, Zaid Alex, 31, also voiced concerns regarding global factors, such as disruptions to oil routes, which could affect local fuel prices.
“If this situation persists, not only will fuel prices rise, but other sectors such as retail and fresh produce will also be affect,” he said.
However, he hopes the government can continue to introduce appropriate measures to ensure that the prices of goods remain controlled.
Civil servant, Abdul Majid Azman, 37, is confident the government will ensure fuel supplies remain stable, although this depends on global economic developments.
“What is important is that the government must have meticulous painting and an effective mechanism to ensure this stability continues. “he said
The government has taken proactive measures to ensure that the nation’s energy supply stability remains guaranteed.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Amar Fadillah Yusof previously stressed that the government has prepared some contingency plans, including securing supplies from alternative market chains. -UKASnews
