Sarawak Bumiputera Participation In High-Potential Sectors Must Be Expanded
PUTRAJAYA: Participation of the Sarawak Bumiputera community in high-potential sectors, or High-Growth High Value (HGHV) industries, must be expanded in line with the evolving global economic landscape and the state’s development needs.
Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan emphasised this when attending the Bumiputera Economic Council (MEB) Steering Committee Meeting No. 1/2026 chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Patinggi Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi at Perdana Putra, on Monday.
Datuk Amar Awang Tengah said the sectors identified include hydrogen, petrochemicals, advanced manufacturing, aerospace and semiconductors, all of which are seen as key drivers of new economic growth and high-skilled employment opportunities.
In addition, efforts to strengthen food security through the development of commercial agriculture were highlighted as a strategic measure to ensure stable food supply while increasing income levels of rural communities.
The meeting focused on strengthening the economic position of the Bumiputera community to ensure resilience and readiness in facing current and future economic challenges.
Various strategies were discussed to enhance Bumiputera participation in main economic sectors through a more structured, targeted and high-impact approach.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Premier also underscored the importance of adopting an inclusive and sustainable development approach to ensure that economic benefits are equitably shared among the Bumiputera community, particularly in Sarawak.
All initiatives discussed are aligned with the aspirations of the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030 which aims to position Sarawak as a developed and high-income state by 2030. -UKASnews
