‘Merentas Desa’ 8.0 Promotes Healthy Lifestyle Among Students
KUCHING: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng commended the strong collaboration between Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (SJK) Chung Hua No.3 and MBKS in jointly organising Merentas Desa 8.0 programme this morning, as part of continuous efforts to promote a healthy and active lifestyle among students.
According to a statement, the programme is now in its eighth year and reflects the shared commitment of both the school and MBKS in supporting holistic student development through physical activities and community engagement.
“The event was attended by Dato Wee, together with President of the Sarawak United Association of Chinese Primary School Boards of Management Dato Jonathan Chai Voon Tok, Chairman of the Child Friendly Cities Initiative (CFCI) Councillor Albert Tay, Headmaster of SJK Chung Hua No.3 Bong Nyuk Siong as well as MBKS Councillors,” it said on Friday.
Dato Wee congratulated SJK Chung Hua No.3 for its dedication and close partnership with MBKS in ensuring the success of the programme.
“I would like to commend SJK Chung Hua No.3 for its continuous commitment and strong collaboration with MBKS in organising this meaningful programme over the past eight years.
“This initiative not only promotes physical fitness but also instils discipline, resilience and teamwork among students, “he said.
He added that such programmes are increasingly important in the current environment, where many children tend to lead more sedentary lifestyles.
“Programmes like Merentas Desa play a key role in encouraging children to stay active. Regular physical activity is essential to reduce the risk of obesity and to support both physical and mental well-being,” he explained.
Dato Wee also reiterated MBKS’ commitment under the CFCI, noting that MBKS is the first council in Borneo to be recognised by UNICEF as a CFCI Candidate City.
“Through this initiative, MBKS focuses on creating a safe, inclusive and supportive environment for children through awareness, education and community-based programmes.
“He further highlighted that promoting active and nutritious lifestyles is a key component under the CFCI Action Plan, with MBKS working closely with schools and partner agencies to encourage healthier living among children,” the statement said.
The Merentas Desa 8.0 programme stands as a strong example of effective collaboration between schools and local authorities, in line with the shared vision of building a healthier, more active and child-friendly community. -UKASnews
