TYT Sarawak Cup Muay Thai Championship A Platform To Develop Combat Sports
KUCHING: The hosting of the 10th Edition of the Sarawak Governor (TYT) Cup Muay Thai Championship and the 2026 Borneo Cup is seen as an important platform in strengthening the development of combat sports while boosting the state's economy and tourism.
The Mayor of Kuching North City Commission (DBKU), Dato Hilmy Othman, said in his speech that the prestigious championship held at the Kuching Waterfront not only gathered local athletes but also attracted international participation from five countries: Indonesia, Brunei, the Philippines, Thailand, and Singapore.
According to him, the participation of 350 athletes in the championship indirectly elevates Kuching's standing as an international-standard sports destination in the region.
“The organisation of this event, which also introduces the Borneo Cup for the first time, is a significant achievement towards expanding regional cooperation networks and providing a more competitive competition platform,” he said when speaking at the championship here on Saturday.
He added that DBKU remains committed to supporting sports development as a medium to shape a healthy, disciplined, and competitive society, in line with the aspiration to make Kuching an active and liveable city.
At the championship, the Sarawak TYT Cup Champion title was claimed by Sting Muay Thai Club Kuching, with Muay Thai Kenyalang as Runner-up, and Rentap Muay Thai in third place.
Meanwhile, the Champion of the DBKU Mayor's Cup was won by Rentap Muay Thai.
At the same time, he emphasised that the consistent hosting of sporting events is capable of providing a positive impact on the state's economy through increased tourism activities and domestic spending.
He also urged the athletes to display high sportsmanship and discipline, and to use the championship as a field to gain experience and strengthen friendships between participants from various countries.
“Winning or losing is not the primary measure; rather, the value of the experience and the relationships formed are more meaningful,” he remarked. — UKASnews
