Comprehensive Government Approach Strengthens Water Supply & Addresses Flooding For Public Wellbeing
KUCHING: The government’s commitment to strengthening the delivery of basic services continues to be reinforced, with issues such as clean water supply, flooding and drainage systems receiving focused attention through a comprehensive planning approach encompassing short-, medium- and long-term measures.
Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, who is also President of the Progressive Democratic Party (PDP), Dato’ Seri Tiong King Sing, said the ongoing efforts are crucial to ensure that the wellbeing of the people is safeguarded, in line with the government’s priority of addressing fundamental issues on the ground.
According to him, a comprehensive approach is essential to ensure that each issue is resolved effectively and does not persist.
“As those entrusted with responsibility, we must ensure that every problem is addressed through a holistic approach covering the short, medium and long term, so that the solutions implemented are more effective,” he said.
He said this during the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) Convention at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) on Sunday.
The event was officiated by Sarawak Premier and GPS Chairman, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg.
At the same time, he stressed that service delivery must continue to be strengthened so that every government plan genuinely delivers impact at the grassroots level.
“The people do not merely look at announcements, but at the outcomes they can experience in their daily lives,” he said.
Elaborating further, he noted that clean water supply remains a top government priority as it directly affects daily life, thus requiring continuous and high-impact solutions.
He added that feedback received, including during festive seasons, highlights the need to further strengthen the water supply system to ensure greater stability and resilience.
In addition, he emphasised the government’s efforts to address recurring flood issues through a more structured approach, including proposals to deepen riverbeds to overcome sedimentation that disrupts water flow.
According to him, measures such as the construction of retention ponds and pump stations can help in the short term, while long-term solutions require comprehensive improvements to the main drainage system.
“A lasting solution requires sustained efforts, including the rehabilitation of river structures, so that flood issues can be addressed more effectively and over the long term,” he explained.
He added that all these initiatives reflect the government’s commitment to ensuring the continued wellbeing of the people, while enhancing overall quality of life. -UKASnews
