KUCHING: Sarawak must develop its own technological capabilities to protect the state's strategic data from increasingly complex cyber security threats in today's digital era.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg said Sarawak already has cyber laws to protect and regulate data, but these must be supported by security technology capable of repelling external intrusions.
“We also need our own technology to protect what is known as encrypted data.
“The way we protect data depends greatly on technology, because there is also technology capable of breaking it, thereby undermining efforts to safeguard data.
“It requires technology to counter technology, so we leave it to scientists to determine how best to protect our data,” he said.
He said this when met by reporters after the Closing Ceremony of Protect Sarawak 2026 – International Conference on Data Privacy and Digital Trust, held here on Wednesday.
The Sarawak Premier added that data protection should involve isolation systems with protective barriers that cannot be breached.
However, he said there are advanced computing technologies using chips to bypass data security, especially as data storage is expected to shift towards Artificial Intelligence (AI) grids supported by satellites.
He added that global warfare has also shifted towards chip-based systems, with missiles controlled by chips rather than relying solely on fighter jets.
“When you look at warfare today, everything depends on chip strength. That is why it is very complex, but we have no choice.
“That is the reality of the modern world, where wars are no longer fought using fighter jets alone.
“Look at the Iran conflict now, where missiles are being used, and those missiles are all controlled by chips. That is why we are also producing our own chips,” he said. -UKASnews
