MIRI: The organisation of welfare programmes in conjunction with the Gawai Dayak celebration continues to play an important role in strengthening unity and the spirit of care among Sarawak’s multi-ethnic community.
Telang Usan Assemblyman Dato Dennis Ngau said that continuous efforts to assist those in need regardless of race or religion reflect the true spirit of Sarawak’s people living in harmony and mutual support.
He noted the commitment of the Teck Chiao Che Lee Khor Moral Building Association Miri in assisting the less fortunate should be emulated as it has successfully united the community through the practice of mutual assistance and a culture of giving.
He said the welfare initiatives which were carried out consistently every year reflect unity and humanitarian values among the people of Sarawak regardless of race and religion.
“In today’s world, it is difficult to find people with such kind hearts. They do not only assist one ethnic group but help everyone regardless of race, whether Chinese, Dayak, Malay or others. This is the true spirit of the people of Sarawak,” he said at the Gawai Dayak Goodies Giving Away 2026 programme organised by the organisation, held here on Sunday.
Dato Sri Dennis Ngau also expressed his appreciation to the association’s committee for their commitment in organising welfare programmes annually, particularly in conjunction with the Gawai Dayak festive season.
He added that although the contributions may be modest, the sincerity and spirit of giving shown were highly meaningful to the recipients.
In other developments, he also shared his role as Chairman of the Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) in intensifying efforts to promote the state at the international level to attract more tourists.
He said that the development of the tourism sector not only stimulates the economy but also creates employment opportunities for local people including in the hotel, food and transportation sectors.
In the meantime, Dato Sri Dennis Ngau reminded the public to celebrate Gawai in a simple and prudent manner in light of current economic challenges including the rise in global commodity prices.
Earlier, the speech text of the organisation’s President Tonu Pui was read out by Deputy President Paul Chong.
In his speech, he said the distribution of essential items programme has been implemented for the past 15 years as an annual activity of the association to cultivate a spirit of care and a culture of giving among the community.
Paul Chong said about 100 recipients received contributions during the programme, bringing joy and moral support to those in need.
He also expressed his appreciation to the donors, business partners, and committee members including the youth and women’s wings for their tireless efforts in making the programme a success. -UKASnews
