Mambong Earthquake Not Yet At Concerning Level, Full Report Still Pending
KUCHING: The recent earthquake measuring 2.9 on the Richter scale reported in the Mambong area is not yet at a level of concern.
Deputy Minister of Transport Sarawak and Mambong Assemblyman, Datuk Dr Jerip Susil, said the Department of Minerals and Geoscience (JMG) had informed that the reading indicated a minor seismic event that commonly occurs and does not pose any serious threat at present.
He said the relevant authorities are still conducting investigations to determine the actual cause of the incident, as it is the first earthquake ever recorded in the area.
“Sometimes incidents like this can occur, and at the moment they (JMG) are still carrying out investigations to identify the actual cause of the earthquake.
“So far, we do not know the cause, but the advice given is for the public not to be overly worried because the earthquake registered only 2.9 on the Richter scale.
“In several other parts of the world, similar incidents also occur under the same circumstances.
“Nevertheless, I am still awaiting a full report from the relevant authorities,” he told reporters after the closing ceremony of the Sarawak Career and Training (SCaT) Fair 2026 at the Hikmah Exchange Event Centre (HEEC) here on Sunday.
He added that the government and relevant agencies are closely monitoring the situation and hope that such an incident will not recur in the future.
Commenting on infrastructure damage caused by the earthquake, Datuk Dr Jerip said reports of road damage resulting from the incident had been received and repair works would be carried out using the available Emergency and Disaster Fund.
He noted that most roads remain in good condition and are still accessible, with only a few roads affected by damage rather than the entire road network. -UKASnews
