Sabah, Sarawak Agree To Formalise Cross-Regional Economic Cooperation In Borneo Territory
KUCHING: Sabah and Sarawak have reached an agreement to formalise cross-regional economic cooperation in the Borneo territory as a strategic step to strengthen trade, investment, and regional economic development.
Sabah Deputy Chief Minister II and Sabah Minister for Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Datuk Ewon Benedick said the agreement was reached following his courtesy call on Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan yesterday.
According to him, the cooperation will be strategically coordinated through his ministry in Sabah alongside the Sarawak Ministry for International Trade, Industry and Investment (MINTRED) to empower the economic development agendas of both territories.
“Sabah needs Sarawak, and Sarawak needs Sabah to ensure this Borneo territory develops more dynamically,” he said.
He said this while speaking at the official opening of the 17th Dayak Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) and Kadazandusun Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) Gawai-Kaamatan Exhibition and Business Event here on Saturday.
In the meantime, he noted that the joint organisation by the DCCI and KCCI proves the close ties and strong spirit of unity between Sabah and Sarawak.
He said that the Gawai Dayak and Pesta Kaamatan celebrations are no longer just about celebrating the harvest season, but have instead evolved into an important platform connecting the economic, social, and cultural aspects of the Borneo community.
“This two-day exhibition, which gathers more than 50 exhibitors from Sabah and Sarawak, features various products including handicrafts, agro products, food, and creative industries that reflect our rich cultural heritage.
“This diversity also acts as a driver for the development of a unique and high-value local creative economy,” he added.
In this regard, he urged small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Sabah and Sarawak to leverage the opportunities available through cross-regional cooperation by exploring new markets, utilizing digital technology, and building strategic networks through business matching sessions. — UKASnews
