MUKAH: A total of 31 Melanau community leaders and village chiefs (KMKKs) from Mukah District attended the Adet Melanau Mukah Workshop: Custom Study/Collection of Information for Adat on Miscellaneous organised by the Council for Native Customs and Traditions Sarawak (MAIS) at a hotel here from 4 to 5 August 2026.
MAIS Council Chief Datu Dr Neilson Ilan Mersat was present to officiate the workshop.
According to him, the workshop is part of MAIS’ initiative to preserve the customs, culture and value system of the community, especially the Melanau community.
He added that it is crucial for each KMKK to continue improving their knowledge to foster understanding and culture at the division, district and village level.
Datu Dr Neilson emphasised this effort as KMKKs act as the frontline of leadership that supports the customs, culture and traditions of the native community in Sarawak.
In addition, he also shared that the final draft of Adet Melanau is currently being reviewed by the Sarawak Attorney General's
Chambers (SAGC).
Meanwhile, a similar workshop for Melanau KMKKs from Dalat District will be held on 6 to 7 August 2026.
Also present were MAIS Council Secretary Elsie William, Temenggong Hendi Suhai, Pemanca Mohamad @ Mohd Jali Kawi, Head of Melanau Customs Research Section Robinson Benedict Mugok and MAIS officers. -UKASnews
