Sarawak's First Solar-Electric e-Boat Named 'Seri Batang Ai'
KUCHING: Sarawak Energy's first solar-assisted electric e-boat, developed specifically to support operations at the Batang Ai Hydroelectric Project (HEP), has been named 'Seri Batang Ai'.
The naming of the e-boat was performed by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg at Pangkalan Sapi here today.
Measuring 10 metres in length, Seri Batang Ai is fitted with an electric propulsion system designed by Sarawak Energy's research and development (R&D) team, while its construction was undertaken by a local company, Global Fibreglass Industries.
It is understood that the vessel is powered by two electric outboard motors with a capacity of 40 kilowatts each, giving a combined output of 80 kilowatts, along with a battery energy storage system with a capacity of 92 kilowatt-hours.
The battery system is also supported by rooftop solar panels with a capacity of 3.6 kilowatt-peak and can be charged using grid supply.
Seri Batang Ai has an estimated operating range of between 40 and 50 kilometres, an operating duration of about three to four hours and a maximum speed of 25 kilometres per hour, and is able to carry up to 12 registered passengers.
The use of the electric propulsion system produces no direct exhaust emissions, besides reducing noise and vibration, thereby helping to minimise disruption to the environment and biodiversity.
Apart from supporting operations at Batang Ai, the e-boat will also be used to transport staff and visitors, including technical visits to the Batang Ai floating solar farm.
The development of Seri Batang Ai continues Sarawak Energy's e-Penambang initiative, which previously involved converting conventional boats into electric boats before expanding to the development of purpose-built electric work boats.
The e-boat was first showcased during the 40th anniversary celebration of the Batang Ai HEP in 2025, while Sarawak Energy received the Boat Licence and River Transport Permit (RTP) for Seri Batang Ai on Oct 21.
The official naming of Seri Batang Ai marks another step by Sarawak Energy in exploring practical applications of clean energy technology beyond conventional power generation, while strengthening local R&D capabilities and engineering expertise.
Also present were Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian, Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Urban Development II Datuk Len Talif Salleh, and Deputy Minister in the Premier's Department of Sarawak (Project Coordinator for Regional Development Agencies, DBKU and Islamic Affairs) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi. -EDISI UKAS
