Sarawak Traffic Games Fosters Road Safety Awareness From A Young Age
MIRI: The Sarawak Traffic Games (STG) Miri Division Level 2026 serves as a practical road safety education platform aimed at cultivating awareness and discipline among students from an early age.
Sarawak Minister for Transport Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin explained that the importance of such education is increasingly vital, given that 16,776 road accidents, including 293 fatal cases, were recorded across Sarawak from January to September 2026.
“According to statistics from the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), this figure equates to an average of more than 60 accidents daily throughout the nine-month period.
“In Miri alone, several routes have been identified as high-accident risk areas, including Jalan Miri–Pujut–Lutong, Jalan Miri–Bintulu, Jalan Miri–Airport, and the Jalan Kuala Baram By-Pass,” he said.
He said this while speaking at the Closing Ceremony of the Sarawak Traffic Games Miri Division Level 2026 at the Miri Traffic Park on Friday.
Dato Sri Lee noted that reducing road accidents requires not only enforcement, but also heightened public awareness and education, particularly among children.
According to him, through STG, students have the opportunity to learn road safety aspects in a practical and interactive manner, including recognising road signs, traffic lights, pedestrian crossings, and road intersections.
He also expressed his appreciation to the Royal Malaysia Police, the Road Transport Department, the District Education Office, the Miri Resident's Office, schools, teachers, parents, as well as all departments and agencies that contributed to the success of the programme.
Meanwhile, the Traffic Games primary school category was won by Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Jalan Bintang, followed by runner-up SK Miri, and third place Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (SJK) North.
The champion for the secondary school category was Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Pujut, followed by runner-up SMK Lutong, and third place SMK Saint Columba. –UKASnews
