Net Zero 2050 Agenda Targets RM347 Billion In Green Investments
KUCHING: The implementation of the Sarawak Net Zero 2050 Strategy is expected to unlock RM347 billion in green investment opportunities and support the creation of approximately 223,000 jobs.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg said the implementation of the strategy was in line with the state's efforts to strengthen sustainable economic growth and reduce carbon emissions by 35 per cent.
“The strategy targets a 35 per cent reduction in carbon emissions, while creating RM347 billion worth of green investment opportunities and supporting approximately 223,000 job opportunities.
“These efforts will also contribute towards achieving the country's net-zero target and Malaysia's global climate commitments,” he said.
He was speaking at the Sarawak Ministry of Energy and Environmental Sustainability (MEESty) 2026 Appreciation Night and the Launch of the Sarawak Net Zero Strategy and Carbon Plan, held here on Friday.
Elaborating further, he said the strategy had been formulated around 15 strategic priorities, covering eight major carbon-emitting sectors and seven cross-sectoral areas of action.
“The strategy focuses on reducing carbon emissions from the energy, industrial, transport, building and waste management sectors through the implementation of specific action plans to address emissions in each of these sectors,” he added.
At the same time, Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari highlighted Sarawak's natural advantages, including its forests, peatlands, mangroves and other ecosystems, which play an important role in absorbing carbon while supporting biodiversity conservation and water resources.
However, he cautioned that the state's natural resource advantages should not lead to complacency, stressing that they must be complemented by continuous environmental planning and management.
Also present were Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi, Deputy Minister for Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Datuk Len Talif Salleh, Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni, MEESty Permanent Secretary Datu Abang Ahmad Abang Morni and other distinguished guests. -UKASnews
