MEESty, UN Global Compact Network Join Forces To Drive Private Sector Decarbonisation In Sarawak
KUCHING: The Ministry of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Sarawak (MEESty) has joined forces with the UN Global Compact Network Malaysia, Brunei and Cambodia (UNGCMBC) to strengthen sustainability practices and accelerate decarbonisation efforts among businesses in Sarawak, particularly small and medium enterprises (SMEs).
The collaboration was formalised through the exchange of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Friday, marking a step towards greater private sector participation in Sarawak's transition to a green economy and its ambition to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.
According to a MEESty statement issued on Friday, the partnership will support the implementation of the Sarawak Sustainability Blueprint 2030 and the sustainability objectives under the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.
The collaboration will focus on mobilising businesses and industry players through forums, roundtable discussions and knowledge-sharing platforms, while strengthening their environmental, social and governance (ESG) and sustainability capabilities through executive education and professional development programmes.
It will also explore the provision of practical sustainability tools and solutions, including greenhouse gas accounting, carbon data management and supply chain sustainability assessment, to help businesses prepare for and implement decarbonisation measures.
MEESty Permanent Secretary Datu Abg Ahmad Abg Morni said private sector participation was crucial to achieving Sarawak's net zero ambitions.
“Sarawak’s path to Net Zero 2050 is powered by private sector action, equipping our businesses and SMEs to turn climate ambition into a resilient, future-ready green economy,” he said.
Meanwhile, UNGCMBC Executive Director Faroze Nadar commended Sarawak's leadership in advancing its decarbonisation agenda, saying the next priority was to translate the state's ambitions into action across the private sector.
He said the partnership would equip businesses, particularly SMEs and those within supply chains, with the necessary capabilities, tools and partnerships to accelerate decarbonisation, strengthen competitiveness and contribute to Sarawak's net zero ambitions.
The collaboration will leverage UNGCMBC's sustainability expertise, programmes and regional and global networks to help businesses turn their sustainability commitments into practical action.
The MoU exchange was held in conjunction with the launch of the Sarawak Net Zero Strategy and Carbon Plan on Friday.
Both parties will use the MoU as a framework for future cooperation, with specific initiatives and implementation arrangements to be mutually agreed upon. -UKASnews
