Demand For Fresh Produce Surges Ahead Of Aidilfitri
KUCHING: Trading activity at Medan Niaga Satok remains vibrant in the lead-up to the festive season, with encouraging public response despite traders facing the challenges of rising wholesale prices.
A survey by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) found that demand for fresh produce, such as chicken, meat, and coconut milk, remains stable, ensuring steady business for local vendors.
Aduka Morni, a 43-year-old chicken trader, noted that this year’s sales are proceeding as usual without a significant downturn, despite increased overheads.
"Alhamdulillah, sales remain consistent. The public response hasn't changed much, and the supply of chicken and meat is sufficient," said Aduka, who has traded at the location for eight years.
He described the atmosphere surrounding Aidilfitri preparations as being as lively as ever, with families continuing the tradition of preparing festive meals together.
Meanwhile, coconut milk trader Zulkifli Abdullah, 39, explained that a shortage of mature coconuts has led to price hikes, posing the primary challenge this season.
"Demand is still there, especially towards the end of the day, but the price of mature coconuts has risen due to reduced stock," said Zulkifli, who manages a family business established over 50 years ago.
In a similar vein, 24-year-old meat trader Mashahor Khan admitted to a slight dip in sales following a price increase from RM65 to RM70 per kilogramme.
"Sales are a bit slower compared to last year, but customers have begun buying more frequently over the last few days," he noted.
Overall, the atmosphere at Medan Niaga Kubah Ria remains bustling. While traders have had to adjust their operations to account for rising market costs, the supply of essential raw materials remains adequate to meet festive demand. — UKASnews
