Sarawak’s Strong Energy Position Reduces Dependence On Fossil Fuels
KUCHING: Sarawak currently holds a strong position in the energy sector following a strategic shift toward green energy, effectively reducing its dependency on fossil fuels such as diesel.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Amar Fadillah Yusof stated that the early steps taken by the Sarawak government in developing alternative energy sources have provided a significant advantage when facing uncertainties in global petroleum supply and pricing.
According to him, Sarawak now derives approximately 60 per cent of its power generation from hydro sources, further supported by solar, gas, and coal.
“With the foresight of Sarawak's leadership, the transition to green energy began earlier. This makes the state's energy position more stable and comfortable compared to other regions,” he said when met by reporters during the Kampung Semariang Batu Aidilfitri Jalinan Kasih Ceremony on Saturday.
The Petra Jaya Member of Parliament added that this approach not only ensures the stability of domestic energy supply but also supports the growth of the business and industrial sectors within the state.
He explained that the supply of petroleum, including diesel, remains under the regulation of Petronas, with assurances that supply will continue to be managed according to current needs.
However, he cautioned that cost remains a challenge if supplies must be sourced from abroad, due to rising global prices and logistics costs to East Malaysia.
In contrast to Sarawak, Datuk Amar Fadillah noted that Sabah still faces challenges due to a high dependency on diesel for power generation, leaving it exposed to price fluctuations and supply constraints.
He emphasised that Sarawak's green energy development model should serve as a reference for strengthening energy security at the national level.
He concluded by stating that the government will continue to monitor the entire energy supply chain to ensure stability and sufficiency across the country.
