Sarawak Strengthens Position As Host Destination For International Tennis Championships
KUCHING: Sarawak is taking bold steps to strengthen its international profile by hosting the ODEA Cup World Overseas Chinese Team Championship 2026, which has brought together 24 teams from various countries.
The prestigious championship held at the Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association (SLTA) serves as a strategic medium to expand international networks and promote Sarawak on the global stage.
The opening ceremony on Friday was officiated by Batu Kitang Assemblyman Dato Ir Lo Khere Chieng, representing Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew.
Also present were Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Kuching Xing Wei Ping, SLTA President Patrick Liew Chin, Chairman of the World Chinese Tennis Federation Yun Jun Dong, founding Chairman of the federation Chen Ping, as well as members of the federation’s leadership.
In his speech read by Dato Lo, Datuk Sebastian said the hosting of the championship reflects the Sarawak Government’s continued commitment to advancing sports development as a catalyst for tourism and international relations.
He said the championship is more than just a sporting competition, but also a platform to strengthen global ties, foster cultural understanding and create greater international recognition for Sarawak.
A total of 24 teams are taking part, with participants from Kuching, China, Macau, Japan, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and Mongolia, reflecting the global appeal of the tournament.
The championship, which features the 50, 60 and 70 age categories, also highlights the active involvement of experienced athletes in promoting a healthy lifestyle and sportsmanship regardless of age.
Meanwhile, he encouraged participants to take the opportunity to explore Sarawak’s unique attractions and serve as ambassadors in promoting the state to the world.
He stressed that the Sarawak Government will continue intensifying efforts to host more international-standard events as part of its strategy to strengthen the state’s tourism and economy. -UKASnews
