Journalism Remains A Fortress Of Accurate, Authentic & Responsible Information
KUCHING: Journalism serves as an important fortress in ensuring that society receives accurate, authentic, and responsible information, particularly in the social media era which witnesses the rapid dissemination of information.
Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier's Department (Corporate Affairs, Information and UKAS), Datuk Abdullah Saidol, stated that although anyone can now share information through various digital platforms, journalists still play a crucial role in conducting fact-checks and obtaining verification from legitimate sources.
According to him, the speed at which information spreads does not necessarily guarantee its accuracy and truth.
"In today's social media era, anyone can be an information provider. News, pictures, and videos can be disseminated across the world in just a few seconds.
"However, the speed of information dissemination does not necessarily guarantee its accuracy and truth. This is where the true value of journalism lies," he said in his message in conjunction with National Journalists' Day (HAWANA) on Friday.
He added that society still requires journalists as trusted information filters at a time when social media is filled with various claims, speculations, and information of unverified authenticity.
He further explained that ethical journalism also plays a role in combating fake news, slander, and information manipulation that could jeopardise societal harmony.
In the meantime, he said that journalists also function as a bridge between the people and stakeholders by bringing the voice of the community to policymakers, besides helping to explain government policies and initiatives to the public.
"The core principles of journalism will remain relevant even as technology and communication platforms change, as long as society requires truth, transparency, and accountability," he further explained.
In connection with this, Datuk Abdullah urged all parties to continue defending responsible media freedom and strengthening the integrity of journalism.
He also expressed his appreciation to all media personnel for their dedication and commitment to delivering information to society. -UKASnews
