Hari Gawai Dayak Strengthens Sarawak Nation Building
KUCHING: The Hari Gawai Dayak celebration is not merely a platform for family reunions and the homecoming of children to their longhouses, but also serves as an important foundation in strengthening the building of the Sarawak nation based on unity, stability, and prosperity.
Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian said the festival is a symbol of the cultural richness and traditions of the Dayak community celebrating the harvest, while simultaneously reinforcing the spirit of togetherness among people of various races in this state.
According to him, Hari Gawai Dayak also functions as a medium that unites all Sarawakians regardless of background to respect one another, interact, and celebrate the cultural diversity that stands as the state's primary strength.
“Gawai Dayak is not just a family gathering or returning to the longhouse. It is a cultural festival celebrating the harvest and at the same time bringing Sarawakians together to strengthen relationships, respect one another, and enjoy this celebration as one big Sarawak family.
“This is the finest example of the building of the Sarawak nation that needs to be continuously strengthened because unity is the foundation of stability, while stability is the catalyst for prosperity,” he said in his 2026 Hari Gawai Dayak Message.
He noted that the success achieved by Sarawak today has enabled the state to become an exemplar to many parties, and it is held in higher esteem compared to a decade ago.
According to him, the positive changes taking place as a result of development planning and political stability have turned Sarawak into a state that is increasingly respected and becomes a source of pride for its people.
In connection with this, he urged Sarawakians residing abroad to also play a role in contributing ideas, expertise, and energy to continue the nation-building agenda and the development of the state.
“When returning to Sarawak, see for yourself the changes that have taken place and think about how you can play a role to help make Sarawak more progressive in the future,” he stated.
Concluding his message, he also reminded the public to always prioritise safety throughout the festive season by practicing a responsible attitude while driving to ensure that the Hari Gawai Dayak celebration continues to be celebrated in a joyous and safe atmosphere. — UKASnews
